3. How did the authorities respond?

No tear gas or lethal emissions were used by police in Seattle, according to a police department spokesperson. 

But federal agents have received criticism for use of tear gas outside the federal courthouse in Portland.

According to tweets from the Portland Police Department, Portland officers were told not to engage in the crowds that were rampant in the city. Portland Police also acknowledged the differing tactics by federal agents.

Police in Portland arrested four individuals: Phillis Hand, 27; Benjamin Browne, 29; Adam Bidema, 39; and Dexter Pearce, 30. All were arrested in relation to the riots, according to a police statement.

Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell tweeted on Sunday and asked for an end to the violence. He also gave thanks for the support the department has received from the community in the tweet.

Federal agents were criticized for arresting demonstrators wearing camouflage and driving unmarked vehicles. 

One video has circulated social media that is causing controversy. The video shows a federal agent beating a man who did not fight back and did not appear to be a threat to the agents.
