This week marks the anniversary of when August Gottlieb Spangenberg, founder of the Moravian Church in North America, was born in Klettenberg-Hohenstein, Saxony.

A German bishop of the Moravian group known as the Unitas Fratrum, Spangenberg oversaw missionary work in Georgia and Pennsylvania.

In 1740, Spangenberg founded the North American branch of the Unitas Fratrum, with its headquarters being in Philadelphia.
